I struggled with my natural waves for years. I always straightened it or had it in a bun because I always thought that my hair was just frizzy. But, I recently learned how to wear my natural hair and I love it!
Here are the five hair care mistakes I made, and how I rock my natural texture.
Mistake one: I used shampoos that had sulfates in them. I had never thought anything of the shampoo I was using. I was using random brands that all promised to help my hair be less frizzy. I learned that sulfates are what make the shampoo lather. But they also strip your hair of its natural oils, creating dry, frizzy, damaged looking hair. I now use only Kristen Ess shampoo and conditioner. They smell amazing, and they are sulfate free!
Mistake two: I wasn’t getting a shampoo that is specifically made for my hair type and texture. Like I said, I was only looking for shampoos that would help with frizz. I never thought if finding one for my hair type. Since my hair is wavy and can get frizzy, I needed something moisturizing and hydrating. Kristen Ess has a shampoo made to hydrate waves and curls.
Mistake three: I was using too much heat on my hair. I know everyone hates to hear this but, heat is bad for your hair. Yes we can get the perfect style with heat, but it dries out and damages your hair. I use a straightener on the ends of my hair, to make my waves look more put together, and then I will curl a few pieces that look too straight. It is still heat, but it’s a lot less than straightening my whole head every day. I also use lukewarm or cold water when showering. It makes my hair smoother and shinier and it’s less heat.
Mistake four: I was washing my hair too often. Even now I feel like I should let my hair go more. I used to wash my hair every day, then I switched to every other day, and now I wash my hair after every two days. It’s hard to let your hair go for a while, without even using dry shampoo, but it’s worth it. Our hair needs to breathe and it needs its natural oils in order to be healthy and strong.
Mistake five: I wasn’t doing an apple cider vinegar rinse. At least once a week, I mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with two cups of water and use it to rinse my hair. I usually do this after I shampoo my hair and before I condition. But, if my hair just needs to be refreshed without the shampoo, I use only the apple cider vinegar rinse. Apple cider vinegar restores the PH balance of your hair, and helps with greasy hair as well as dandruff. It leaves my hair feeling very soft and hydrated.
How I wear my hair naturally: I wish my hair using the Kristen Ess shampoo and conditioner. Next, I towel dry my hair with a t shirt, this prevents frizz and damage. I don't usually put anything in wet hair, because I feel like it weighs my hair down. I just gently brush it out and let t air dry, I usually sleep on it wet.
The next morning I will straighten the ends and roots of my hair. This makes it look more put together. Then, I go through and curl the fronts of my hair and any pieces that are frizzy, or too straight. I don't curl every piece of hair, just a few to make it look more put together. After the curls dry, the run my fingers through my hair and voilá!
